“We were driving down the street and some people flagged us down. They told us up the block, in the middle of the street, a man and woman were fighting. They weren’t sure if either party was armed, but they were going at it.
“We drove up there and jumped out of the car,” Bobby said. “I grabbed the man and my partner took the woman. I told the guy, ‘Hey, let’s just forget about this. There are no injuries here. Let’s you and I take a walk. You can tell me what happened.”
Bobby’s partner took the opposite approach. “I’m not sure what happened, but she began screaming at the woman. A crowd started to form and soon they were yelling obscenities. Seconds after that bottles started coming at us. I called in an ’85.’ That’s the code for officer in need of backup. There must have been close to one hundred people on the street all trying to get at my partner. It all happened in a couple of minutes and it was very scary.”
Hom explains that it only takes a couple of minutes to incite a crowd. “The group can get very big very fast especially in warmer weather in these tightly packed neighborhoods where everyone is hanging out on the street. Think about it. There were just two of us and hundreds of them moving in all because my partner reacted emotionally when someone on the street insulted her.”
